Umbrella Summer by Lisa Graff

When Annie Richards rides her bike these days she not only wears a helmet, she wears elbow pads, knee pads--and Ace bandages wrapped around her ankles. Ever since her brother Jared died, she is extra careful--in fact, maybe riding her bike, even very slowly, is too dangerous. Maybe, she decides, she should just walk. Annie's parents aren't dealing with Jared's death very well, either. But a new neighbor, some persistent friends, and a good book help Annie out, and Annie gives her parents some help, too.
