Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin

How far would you travel to get your heart's desire? Minli is not even sure how long the journey will be, but she is determined to find the Old Man of the Moon, hoping that he will grant her family good fortune. Maybe then her discontented mother will no longer complain about how little rice there is to eat, and how thin the walls of their house are, and how shabby their clothing is. Along the way, Minli meets a dragon who can't fly, and together they set off, each with their own wish for the Old Man of the Moon.
